Theft of 600 bolts forces the suspension of suburban trains in Luanda

The theft of 600 screws led the Luanda Railway to temporarily suspend the circulation of suburban trains between the Muceques station and the Cuca level crossing, the company said.

The theft was detected by the surveillance team of the Luanda Railway line, and it is expected that this Tuesday, in the afternoon, circulation will be restored.

Speaking to Lusa news agency, the spokesman for the Luanda Railway, Augusto Osório, said that this situation has already occurred, but this time it had a greater dimension.

According to Augusto Osório, the thefts of fastening screws have been publicly denounced and are known to the local police and Luanda Provincial Command, as well as the local administration.

Asked about the purpose of the theft of this type of material, Augusto Osório said that there is a suspicion that it is for commercialization, namely, for the ferrous material market.

Augusto Osório stressed that the fixing screws are not produced in Angola and have to be imported, which means that, with the current exchange difficulties, “the loss is great”.

"But we are doing the replacement and in the afternoon we will certainly have trains running on this section", said the spokesman for the Luanda Railway, adding that there is no guarantee that the same problem will occur waiting for the police to do their job.

According to the official, the danger of derailment is real and with serious damage, not only for the lives of people, but also for the infrastructure itself.

These thefts, continued Augusto Osório, usually occur between Boavista to Viana, but there was already a similar situation in Icolo and Bengo.

"If people continue, and the way they are doing it, basically, go unpunished, we run the risk of this continuing to spread along the line and there is a greater danger of derailment", he stressed.
