President opens InterContinental in Luanda on Independence Day

The InterContinental Luanda Miramar Hotel, which recently moved into the state sphere, will be inaugurated next week. The ceremony, led by João Lourenço, is scheduled for November 11th, Wednesday, the day in which the 45th anniversary of National Independence is celebrated.

The inauguration of the hotel unit, located at Eixo Viário, is integrated in the celebrations of the 45th anniversary of the country's independence.

In a statement quoted by Novo Jornal, the Presidency reveals that the festivities will start on November 10th, with a tribute at the Presidential Palace.

On the following day, the commemorations will start at 7am with the flag hoisting ceremony, which will take place at the Central Museum of the Angolan Armed Forces. Two hours later, at 9am, will be deposited a wreath in the Memorial Agostinho Neto and at 10am the President of the Republic will move to the facilities of the InterContinental hotel to proceed to its inauguration.

The note also gives account that the celebrations will extend until day 12, with the ceremony of inauguration of the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which will take place at 10:30am.

The construction of the 24-floor building, whose project included a hotel with 377 rooms and a casino, was stopped for two years and only resumed in January 2018.

It should be remembered that at the end of October the government decided to nationalize Miramar Empreendimentos, the company that owned the InterContinental Luanda Miramar Hotel. It was on October 28 that João Lourenço decided to nationalize 60 percent of the company's shares. As 40 percent already belonged to Sonangol, the unit became wholly state-owned.
