Covid-19: Africa with 318 more deaths and a total of 1,917,960 infected

In the last 24 hours, Africa recorded an additional 318 deaths related to covid-19, increasing to 46,272 the total number of fatalities from the new coronavirus, which has already infected 1,917,960 people in the region, according to official data.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), in the 55 member states of the organization there have been over 13,140 cases of infection with the new coronavirus in the last 24 hours.

The number of recovered people is now 1,622,252, 15,144 more than the day before.

The largest number of cases of infection and deaths are registered in Southern Africa, with 830,193 infections and 21,539 deaths from covid-19. In this region, South Africa, the most affected country on the continent, accounts for a total of 742,394 cases of infection and has passed the barrier of 20,000 deaths (20,011).

North Africa, the second most affected area by the pandemic, has a total of 597,195 people infected and 16,228 killed and in East Africa there are 233,516 cases and 4,535 fatalities.

In the West African region, the number of infections is 195,417, with 2808 fatalities, and Central Africa has 61,639 cases and 1164 deaths.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most fatalities, after South Africa, has 6405 deaths and 109,881 infected, followed by Morocco, which counts 4506 fatalities and 270,626 cases of infection.

Algeria followed, with 64,257 infections and 2093 deaths.

Among the six most affected countries are also Ethiopia, which records 100,727 cases of infection and 1,545 fatalities, and Nigeria, with 64,516 infected and 1,162 dead.

In relation to African countries that have Portuguese as their official language, Angola leads in number of deaths and Mozambique has the highest number of cases.

Angola records 312 deaths and 12,953 cases, followed by Cape Verde (102 deaths and 9560 cases), Mozambique (104 deaths and 13,991 cases), Equatorial Guinea (85 dead and 5104 cases), Guinea-Bissau (43 dead and 2419 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (16 dead and 962 cases).
