Covid-19: Africa with 191 more deaths and a total of 1,813,065 infected

The African continent recorded 191 more deaths due to covid-19 in the last 24 hours, increasing the total number of fatalities from the new coronavirus to 43,612, which has already infected 1,813,065 people in the region, according to official data.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), in the 55 member states of the organization there were 10,714 more cases of covid-19 in the last 24 hours.

The number of recovered people is now 1,484,042, 8145 more than the day before.

The largest number of cases of infection and deaths are in Southern Africa, with 812,176 infections and 21,022 deaths from covid-19. In this region, South Africa, the continent's most affected country, accounts for a total of 728,836 cases of infection and 19,539 deaths.

North Africa, the second most affected area by the pandemic, has a total of 530,012 infected people and 14,634 killed and in East Africa there are 218,756 infected and 4029 fatalities.

In the West African region, the number of infections is 191,237, with 2,777 fatalities, and Central Africa has 60,890 cases and 1,150 deaths.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most fatalities, after South Africa, registers 6,305 deaths and 108,122 infected, followed by Morocco, which counts 3900 fatalities and 229,565 cases of infection.

Algeria followed, with 58,979 infections and 1989 deaths.

Among the six most affected countries are also Ethiopia, which has 97,502 cases of infection and 1494 fatalities, and Nigeria, with 63,173 infected and 1,151 dead.

Among African countries that have Portuguese as their official language, Angola leads in number of deaths and Mozambique has the highest number of cases.

Angola records 291 deaths and 11,577 cases, followed by Cape Verde (95 deaths and 8944 cases), Mozambique (95 deaths and 13,202 cases), Equatorial Guinea (83 deaths and 5089 cases), Guinea-Bissau (42 deaths and 2414 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (16 dead and 954 cases).
