"The indicators on the labor market show some evidence marked by the impact of the covid-19 pandemic", highlights the Quick Information Sheet for the Employment Survey in Angola dated 31 October.

The publication indicates, for example, that people who in the previous quarters were classified as unemployed and people who actually lost their jobs due to the pandemic can, in this quarter, be classified as inactive.

"The non-availability to start work, for reasons related to the pandemic, can lead to the increase of the inactive population", explains the INE of Angola.

The situation of Public Calamity that prevails to date in the country has resulted in the temporary closure and limitation in the production of goods and services, as well as restrictions on the free movement of people and the closure of schools.

In the third quarter of 2020, schools remained closed and institutions only worked with 75 percent of workers, causing many to work from home.

The unemployed population in Angola increased 9.9 percent in the third quarter, compared to the previous three months and 22 percent year on year, according to figures released by INE.

In the third quarter of 2020, the unemployed population, estimated at 5.2 million people aged 15 or over, increased by 470 898 people compared to the previous quarter and added 937 540 people compared to the same quarter last year.

The employed population aged 15 or over, that is 10.1 million people, registered an increase of 3.7 percent over the previous quarter (361,442 more people) and 1.8 percent over the same quarter of 2019 .

The employment rate stood at 59.7 percent, with an increase of 1.3 percent over the previous quarter (58.9 percent) and a decrease of 2.0 percent over the quarter homologous (60.9 percent).

In the third quarter of 2020, the employed population, who was absent from work, was estimated at 195,287 people, which represents about 2 percent of the employed population. About 30.7 percent were absent for up to three months and more than half (69.3 percent) for more than three months.

The main reason for absence from work was essentially the Covid-19 pandemic, a reason cited by 68.9 percent of employees absent from work.
