João Lourenço addresses State of the Nation at the beginning of the new legislative session

Deputies begin another parliamentary year this Monday, with the second legislative session of the 5th legislature of the National Assembly, the highlight of which will be the message from the President of the Republic on the State of the Nation.

:

João Lourenço should speak at 11:30 am, after the opening of the solemn plenary meeting, at 11:00 am, fulfilling a constitutional imperative, and should present the policies recommended for resolving the main issues and promoting the well-being of Angolans, as determined by article 118.

The President, who is serving his second term, after winning the elections in 2022, addresses his message to the country for the seventh time.

The National Assembly has 220 deputies, distributed by the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), which holds the absolute majority, with 124 parliamentarians, the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), with 90, and the Party of Social Renewal, the National Front for the Liberation of Angola (FNLA) and the Humanist Party of Angola, with two deputies each.

The opening of the parliamentary year takes place in the aftermath of a busy extraordinary plenary session, which took place this Saturday to consider the proposal to dismiss the President of the Republic, presented on Thursday by UNITA.

MPLA majority deputies rejected the creation of a possible commission to deal with the initiative to dismiss the President of the Republic, signed by 90 UNITA deputies, who vehemently protested against the voting method and demanded the nullity of the act.

Shouts of "shame" and "down with the dictatorship" were heard in the room, before the UNITA deputies left the room.

The session was not broadcast, contrary to what has been customary in recent years, and access to the press was also barred, but opposition deputies recorded and circulated numerous videos showing the protests.

The legislature comprises five legislative sessions or parliamentary years, with each legislative session beginning on October 15th and lasting one year, without prejudice to the intervals provided for by Law.

The effective period of operation of the National Assembly is 10 months and ends on August 15th of the following year.
