Chinese Ambassador: Angola contributes to world energy security and peace in the region

The Chinese ambassador to Angola this Thursday praised Angola's contribution to energy security in the world and to peace in the region, stressing that the development strategies of the two countries are complementary.

Gong Tao was speaking at a meeting with journalists in Luanda in which he noted the increase in trade between the two countries of around 30 percent between January and August 2022, compared to the same period last year, exceeding 20 billion dollars.

He also added that China is negotiating an investment protection and promotion agreement with Angola and is ready to offer a tax exemption for 98 percent of goods imported from African countries.

Asked whether Angola will play a greater role in the global geostrategic and political landscape, in the current context of the energy crisis associated with the war in Ukraine, Gong Tao said that the oil-rich African country "has made a great contribution to ensuring energy security of the world".

In addition to oil, he stressed, Angola is also diversifying its energy sources "and China can also participate in all these areas".

He also noted the "good role" that Angola has played in maintaining regional peace and stability, noting that, unlike conflicts in several African countries, "this region of sub-Saharan Africa lives in peace and stability".

The Chinese diplomat stated that China is interested in continuing to promote cooperation with Angola, in terms of trade and investment, and wants to attract more businessmen, stressing that new projects are under way, or in perspective.

Among these, he pointed out the construction of a new shopping center in Luanda, a paper pulp factory, factories for the assembly of electrical appliances and other electronic equipment, but also projects in the agricultural and productive area, some of which are in an experimental phase, such as the breeding of animals of silk.

The meeting was the occasion for Gong Tao to present his views on the results of the 20th Congress of the Communist Party of China, which took place last week, noting that China is continuing "on a journey of modernization and development".

"This congress took place at a very special time for China and the rest of the world," he said, stressing that "the Chinese people are joining forces towards the goal of achieving modernization" and revitalizing the Chinese nation.

On the unusual withdrawal from Congress of former party secretary general Hu Jintao, he said that the former Chinese leader is in his 80s and the incident would be related to health issues.

He also welcomed the "eradication of poverty in Chinese territory" and considered that China has achieved a renewal of its ideas, under the leadership of Xi Jinping, offering "certainties" in the face of world uncertainty.

"We live in situations of risks, divergences, conflict, challenges and this congress, in addition to designing a goal and strategic objectives for Chinese development, offers China certainty in the face of world uncertainties, a China of peace, of political stability and social", reinforced the diplomat.

He also stressed that China offers opportunities to the rest of the world, seeking to attract more foreign investment and develop cooperation with other countries, pointing to initiatives such as the Belt and Road and the China-Africa Cooperation Forum, as a demonstration of China's connection with other countries.

"Can't go back, close the door again," he stressed.

Regarding the relationship with Russia, he said that China supports partnerships and maintains relations of mutual respect and non-interference in internal affairs, keeping itself on an equal footing, both with Russia and other countries, such as Portugal.

Regarding the situation in Taiwan, he considered that it is "an internal matter", resulting from the civil war in China, around which "provocations" arise from foreign forces "contrary to the will of the Chinese people" and that "do not want China to remain in peace".

The military maneuvers have served for China to show its "ability and determination" to defend the "one China" principle against forces "that want to use Taiwan as a chess pawn".

He also stated that in China there are "different ideas" and that people inside and outside the party are heard, "but the national strategy for development can only be one, it cannot be this strategy today and another strategy another day", which relates to Chinese reality and history.

"We know better than anyone how we can make our democracy, how we can bring together the ideas, the initiatives of all of us, different, for a common goal", he stressed, denying that the opponents are silenced.
