Luanda starts blockade vaccination against measles after 23 positive cases

The capital reported 23 positive cases of measles and health authorities started this Tuesday a blockade vaccination for children aged between six months and five years to stop the outbreak, which is mainly registered in border municipalities.

According to the provincial coordinator of the Expanded Vaccination Program (PAV) in Luanda, Felismina Neto, the 23 cases already registered are a warning sign for the authorities, which justifies the start of the blockade vaccination throughout the province and which should last ten days.

"In Luanda we notified these cases, namely eight in the municipality of Cacuaco, eight in Viana, and the rest in the municipalities of Belas, Icolo and Bengo, Kilamba Kiaxi and in the urban district of Maianga", said the official, in statements on Tuesday to Lusa.

The aforementioned municipalities, she explained, cover the capital's belt, bordering areas of other provinces and "this makes the spread of the disease focus more in these places".

"And this is what we are doing in the reporting municipalities, but taking into account the specificity of the province of Luanda, because of the population density, territorial extension and because among the VAP diseases, measles is the most transmissible in the whole world", stressed.

Felismina Neto also informed that the health authorities of Luanda are strengthening the routine vaccine in health units at different levels, both in the public and private network and that there are sufficient doses for blocking vaccination.

"The blockade should end in 10 days, we have doses in sufficient quantities to respond to this concern of the blockade and also to maintain the routine in the health units", assured the PAV coordinator in Luanda.
