Governor of Uíje laments the lack of schools and seeing children studying under mango trees

The governor of the province of Uíje said this Tuesday the lack of schools in the region as “screaming”, highlighting that there are still children studying under mango trees and others who go to the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo to attend school.

José Carvalho da Rocha was making a portrait of the province, in the north of the country, during a working meeting with the head of State, João Lourenço, who began a two-day working visit.

According to the governor, the issue of infrastructure for education in the province "is glaring".

"Right here, at its headquarters, we still have students studying in rubble, we have students studying under the mango trees and it has in fact been a problem that we have been tackling," said José Carvalho da Rocha.

The government official stressed that these are "very glaring" situations, referring only to the capital, that if "extrapolation to different points, the situation is still worse" than the one in the city of Uíje.

According to the governor, there is an urgent need to build schools in border areas, as there are still students from that province, "particularly those who live in the border region, such as Maquela do Zombo, Milunga, Quimbele, who cross the border and study in the Democratic Republic of Congo".

"It is, in fact, a problem that we have, that we think we need to resolve this issue", he stressed, pointing to the completion of works at schools, which are at a standstill, some on the initiative of administration programs and others arising from the Integrated Plan for Intervention in Municipalities (PIIM).

"It is also important to mention that one of our great difficulties in the education sector is also the existence of an insignificant number of teachers, particularly in those more specific subjects, such as mathematics, physics and others linked to the areas of technology", he stressed.

There are 1083 primary schools in operation in the province, however, the province has a need for an additional 570 schools at various levels, of which 521 are for primary education.

With regard to the energy sector, José Carvalho da Rocha said that, in the 16 municipalities that make up the province, only three benefit from an electricity grid.

The water sector, continued the governor, also presents "many difficulties", and a project is currently being developed in the city of Uíje that will allow for another 10,000 household connections.

"And we have, from time to time, delivered drinking water to different areas here in the city of Uíje, but even so the situation is much more glaring in the different municipalities that we have in the province, although with the PIIM project we can build small water systems. water, but in fact our population is clamoring for a water system in all the municipalities that make up the province", he stressed.

The governor said that some regions of the province are facing the problem of ravines, which "threaten to put at risk the circulation of people and goods in the municipalities, particularly of Quimbele, Sanza Pombo, Milunga and Buengas."

In the afternoon of this Tuesday, the head of State will receive in audience religious entities, traditional authorities, young people and businessmen.

On the second and last day of his visit, João Lourenço will visit the future Technological Center of the province and visit the Agricultural Fair, set up in the city, and should return to the country's capital, Luanda, late on Wednesday morning.
