CASA-CE says it was not contacted to join the United Patriotic Front

The president of CASA-CE said that the coalition has never been contacted to join the United Patriotic Front, stressing that any way of deepening democracy in Angola is welcome.

The leader of the Broad Convergence for the Salvation of Angola – Electoral Coalition (CASA-CE), Manuel Fernandes, who presented his vision on the State of the Nation, told Lusa that CASA-CE was not contacted to be part of the United Patriotic Front (FPU).

The FPU is a political platform integrated by the leaders of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), the Democratic Bloc and the politician Abel Chivukuvuku, general coordinator of the PRA-JA Servir Angola political project, created with the aim of achieving the power in the 2022 general elections.

"The United Patriotic Front is not a political project, it is a space for political concertation, and there was no way CASA-CE, which is already a concertation space in itself, could be part of another concertation space, therefore, even if were contacted, I believe (that) we would not accept to be part", he said.

However, Manuel Fernandes said that all the ways that can contribute to deepen the democratic process in Angola are always welcome.

"If the others decided to do so, we have no reason to criticize. We are here as good observers and we have to worry about our purpose, our work, this is what is fundamental", he stressed.

With regard to the State of the Nation, the leader pointed out as a solution to unemployment in Angola the implementation of policies to encourage entrepreneurship and the creation of micro, small and medium-sized companies.

According to Manuel Fernandes, the State should assume a fundamental role in opening lines of credit and financial support for business initiatives, however, in the short term, the priority should focus on recovering and supporting existing productive businesses, contributing to their sustainability, to support and expand, "what has already been done and well".

"On the other hand, the executive has to take the program of rehabilitation of secondary and tertiary roads with due seriousness, a pillar condition for the encouragement of internal production, especially in the agricultural sector", he said, stressing that for this to be effective " there must be strict restraint in the management of public affairs".

"We have a country with empty coffers and therefore superfluous expenditures must be denounced and widely fought by all", stressed the leader of CASA-CE, who analyzed, in an eight-page text, the State of the Nation, with a focus on health, social and economic situation, education, housing, politics, justice and human rights and combating corruption and impunity.

Manuel Fernandes considered that the issue of combating corruption and impunity, assumed as the standard bearer of the current mandate by the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), "walks under strong signs of selectivity and lack of transparency".

For CASA-CE, more than long reports made by Public Television of Angola on the subject, "the Angolan people want to know how much was repatriated, who repatriated, where it is deposited, how much remains to be repatriated and what is intended to be done with the repatriated values".

"We, CASA-CE, continue to defend that those who have placed themselves at the disposal of justice, to return what they have illicitly removed from the Angolan treasury, must, of course, receive differentiated treatment. This means that the acts surrounding the process recovery of assets must take place in the secrecy of the State or of justice, as has been happening in many cases", he stressed.

According to the president of CASA-CE, "there must be total transparency, even so that the good attitude of the people involved, in giving back what is foreign, is encouraged by everyone, bearing in mind the fact that the fight against corruption and impunity is also an exercise in moralizing society".

In the political domain, Manuel Fernandes pointed to local elections as the great challenge not materialized in this political year, "due to the lack of political will".
