UNITA President “absolutely calm” about the supposed annulment of his mandate in the Constitutional

The president of UNITA said this Thursday that is "absolutely calm" about the alleged ruling of the Constitutional Court (TC), which supposedly annuls his mandate, lamenting "interferences in judicial bodies" and questioning the "strange silence" of the authorities.

"As you can see, we are calm. We are not going to make any statement without having a fact, so what we had was strangely the official bodies giving indication to each other with a leak of information difficult to explain, but we are waiting for the publication of the eventual judgment so that we can later pronounce ourselves", affirmed this Thursday Adalberto Costa Júnior, when questioned by Lusa.

The leader of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), the largest opposition party, reaffirmed that he was "absolutely calm", considering that he was facing "a very serious circumstance in relation to the credibility of the institutions", as well as in relation to "function for which these institutions exist and are created".

Institutions, he stressed, "must be a factor of credibility, of guaranteeing compliance with the law and not of instability at various levels and interference".

The press reported on Tuesday that the TC plenary annulled the 13th UNITA congress, which in 2019 elected Adalberto Costa Júnior as president of this party, following a complaint by militants about the politician's alleged dual nationality - and which he himself has already denied.

This Thursday, in statements to journalists, at the end of a day of verification and updating of the unofficial electoral registration in three one-stop shops for the public service (BUAP), Costa Júnior also said that it was premature to address the matter, questioning, however, the silence of the authorities.

"But it is early, there is no judgment, which is very strange. We are on the third day of this type of pre-announced indicators, there is a newspaper in the square that announced all this a year ago, so let's see what will happen very calmly", assured.

Adalberto Costa Júnior, also coordinator of the United Patriotic Front (FPU), the opposition's electoral political platform, proclaimed last Tuesday in Luanda, with the aim of reaching power in 2022, updated his record together with politicians Abel Chivukuvuku and Filomeno Vieira Lopes, both FPU deputy coordinators.

Also questioned about the possibility of the Constitutional Court validating and/or effecting the alleged ruling, the UNITA leader replied to Lusa: "As I said, let's see, if in fact the ruling comes out in this logic, we will be able to analyze it in detail and in due course also give our interpretations".

At the level of the three BUAP visited this Thursday by the political leaders who support the FPU, citizens showed solidarity, especially with Adalberto Costa Júnior, having been recommended "not to be shaken by the current pressure".

The next general elections in Angola are scheduled for 2022 and the electoral registration process is currently taking place in Luanda and in the interior of Angola.
