The TC's decision was released this Tuesday by TV Zimbo.
According to the channel, which invokes a source close to the TC, the higher court met this Tuesday with its plenary body to rule on the challenge and voted for the annulment of the congress that elected Adalberto da Costa Júnior.
The process was carried out by alleged UNITA militants who asked for the removal of Adalberto da Costa Júnior due to alleged irregularities registered at the congress, namely the fact that he ran without giving up portuguese nationality.
Adalberto da Costa Júnior became the third president of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) on 15 November 2019, winning more than 50 percent of the vote in a universe of 960 voters.
UNITA has always defended the legality of the election of its leader and, in mid-August, accused the ruling MPLA party of "subverting the law in order to perpetuate itself in power", criticizing the regime's stance in controlling the judicial system.
To quell the controversy over the nationality of its leader, the executive secretariat of the permanent committee of UNITA's political commission reacted, as early as May, saying that Costa Júnior "resigned and lost the Portuguese nationality acquired" as measured by the "processes examined" by the Court Constitutional.
"The election of Engineer Adalberto Costa Júnior to the position of President of the Party followed the Constitution, the Law on Political Parties, UNITA's Statutes and the regulations of its XIII Ordinary Congress", they say, recalling that "the document renouncing the acquired nationality of Eng.
