Covid-19: Angola registers third wave of pandemic with peak this month

Angola is registering the third wave of covid-19, with a peak this month and an increasing trend of virus transmission among the population, due to the circulation of new variants, says the final communiqué of the Council of the Republic.

The Council of the Republic, the head of State's consultative body, met this Monday and addressed issues on the situation of covid-19 in Angola, the public consultation process for changing the political-administrative division and the preparation of the electoral process in the country.

Regarding the covid-19 pandemic, the statement read at the end of the meeting by the spokesperson, Rosa Cruz e Silva, states that the disease continues to pose a serious threat to the lives of citizens and to the country's economic growth, being the most important strategy. effective prevention and combating population vaccination.

The document underlines that efforts must continue to be made by the Government to acquire vaccines, with a view to ensuring a vaccination coverage of 60 percent of the population.

The counselors called for improved communication by the Multisectoral Commission for Prevention and Combat to Covid-19, so that misinformation is stopped in time, increased public awareness and increased mobilization for mass adherence to the vaccination process and observation of prevention measures, as well as strengthening the approach to the covid-19 theme in national languages.

The need to increase vaccination posts and the offer of public transport to reduce the agglomeration of citizens that promotes the spread of the virus within populations were other suggestions.

With regard to the change in the political-administrative division of Angola, "with a view to the need to promote the economic and social development of the national territory in a harmonious way, something that, to a large extent, is hampered by the country's geographical extension", the councilors praised the initiative and presented some suggestions about the situation of some locations and toponymy issues, which were submitted to the commission.

In the item on the preparation of the next general elections, scheduled for 2022, information was provided on the construction of the new headquarters of the National Electoral Council (CNE), which includes the National Scrutiny Centre, whose works should be completed in April 2022.

The progress of the different stages of the process, such as the unofficial electoral registration within and outside the country, was also made known at the meeting.

The Council of the Republic of Angola is made up of various individuals from the country, including the vice president of the Republic, the president of the National Assembly, leaders of political parties with a parliamentary seat, the attorney general of the Republic, the president of the Constitutional Court, the former president of the Republic, as well as members of civil society.
