Covid-19: Africa with over 150 deaths and 3355 infected in the last 24 hours

Africa has recorded 150 deaths associated with covid-19 in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths since the start of the pandemic to 216,980, and 3355 new infections, according to the latest official data.

According to the African Union Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the cumulative total of cases of infection on the continent since the start of the pandemic is now 8,467,635 and that of recovered is 7,857,384, plus 10,450 in the last 24 hours.

Southern Africa remains the most affected region on the continent, with 3,920,474 cases and 111,017 deaths associated with covid-19.

In this region, is the country most affected by the pandemic, South Africa, which accounts for 2,919,632 cases and 88,925 deaths.

North Africa, which succeeds Southern Africa in covid-19 numbers, has reached 2,578,747 SARS-CoV-2 virus infections and 69,803 deaths associated with covid-19.

East Africa has 1,047,551 infections and 22,601 deaths, and the West Africa region has 659,844 infections and 9915 deaths. Central Africa has the fewest cases of infection and deaths, 261,019 and 3644 respectively.

Tunisia, the second African country with more fatalities after South Africa, registers 25,149 deaths and 711,693 infected, followed by Egypt, with 18,285 deaths and 324,619 cases, and Morocco, with 944,277 infections, but fewer deaths than the two previous countries, 14,612 deaths associated with the disease.

Among the most affected countries are Ethiopia, with 6358 fatalities and 362,335 infections, Algeria, with 5890 deaths and 205,822 infected people, and Kenya, with 5257 deaths associated with the disease and 252,705 accumulated infections.

In relation to Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique accounts for 1928 deaths associated with the disease and 151,225 infected people accumulated since the beginning of the pandemic, followed by Angola (1697 deaths and 63,861 cases), Cape Verde (349 deaths and 38,140 infections), Equatorial Guinea (163 deaths and 13,166 cases), Guinea-Bissau (141 dead and 6131 infected) and São Tomé and Príncipe (56 deaths and 3697 infections).
