Ministry of Health plans to introduce malaria vaccine in the annual vaccination plan

The national director of Public Health, Helga Freitas, informed that the Ministry of Health plans to introduce the vaccine against malaria in the annual plan for vaccinating children.

The official said that the authorities will do their utmost to have the vaccine as soon as possible, with a view to reducing the prevalence of malaria in the country.

Helga Freitas, who spoke in the special TPA, cited by Angop, classified the vaccine as a symbol of hope to reduce child mortality in the country, since this disease especially affects children up to five years old.

"The vaccine will be applied to children from five months of age, in four doses. Therefore, it will be part of the normal vaccination schedule," she said.

José Franco Martins, coordinator of the Program to Fight Malaria, also mentioned by Angop, considered that the use of the vaccine will have a positive impact on the number of hospital admissions.

He explained that with the use of the vaccine, it is estimated that only four out of 10 children have to be hospitalized because of malaria.

According to José Franco Martins' vision, the vaccine should contribute to a reduction of around 40 percent in cases of simple malaria, around 30 percent in cases of severe malaria and around 40 percent in hospitalizations.

In the first half of this year, the country registered around 9,000 deaths in a total of around six million cases of malaria.

It is recalled that, on Wednesday, the WHO announced the approval of the first vaccine against malaria.
