European Union negotiates new financial support package for Angola over the next seven years

The European Union (EU) is negotiating with Angola a new package of financial support, with amounts still to be defined, focused on economic diversification, social protection and governance, the EU ambassador to the African country said this Tuesday.

Jeanette Seppen, who spoke on the sidelines of the Transform training seminar on social protection, noted that the EU has given "the possible support to the Government and the Angolan population in order to find answers" to the challenges of combating poverty and strengthening social protection.

"Unfortunately, you can't do it all at once, but together with the United Nations and other partners, we continue to try to answer these questions," she said, adding that the covid-19 pandemic has made it difficult to respond to these problems.

Seppen said that the EU will continue the projects that have been developed with the Angolan government in this area and is negotiating a new multiannual program for the next seven years, with amounts still to be defined, whose priority areas are economic diversification, governance and public finance, social protection and human capital development.

The EU has several programs currently underway, among which Fresan (Strengthening Resilience and Food and Nutritional Security in Angola), the largest in terms of financial mobilization (65 million euros for the period 2018 to 2024), managed by Instituto Camões and which aims to strengthen food and nutrition security in Angola.

The European ambassador noted, on the other hand, that reforms do not happen overnight.

"For this reason, the partnership between the EU and Angola has lasted for many years, with a past and certainly with a future", emphasized Jeanette Seppen, pointing to the visit of the president of the European Council to Angola as a demonstration of "interest, friendship and the will to continue to work together in this partnership."

Transform (Learning and Transformation Package for Building and Managing Social Protection Systems in Africa), aimed at policy makers, is a program aimed at learning under the stewardship of national levels of social protection in Africa.
