Police dispersed concentrated youths in front of the court with tear gas

The police dispersed this Tuesday with tear gas about a hundred young people who were concentrated in front of the Provincial Court of Luanda and blocked the access streets to the building.

This is the second day that the space surrounding the court, the Palácio Dona Ana Joaquina, in downtown Luanda, is occupied by young people who demand the release of the protesters detained on Saturday, and promised to remain in the place until night.

However, this intention was thwarted at about 6 pm when the Rapid Intervention Police (PIR) was mobilized and dispersed the young people, who had advanced through the streets adjacent to the court and tried to prevent car traffic using tires and containers, while some sat on the street. road.

In the confrontation, the demonstrators threw stones and other objects, which damaged vehicles that were nearby, and were scattered on the road. The police responded by firing tear gas bombs.

The demonstrators remained in place all afternoon, shouting slogans against the MPLA and the "wasps" and displaying banners with the words "Unemployment marginalizes" and posters.

"If condemned, Luanda catches fire", "release", "freedom" appealed to young people, between whistles and claps, in front of a police cordon that today was extended to the building in front of the court, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MIREX ).

Inside the court, the accused began to be heard around 1 pm, after the facilities were disinfected and sanitary conditions were created to start the trial.

According to one of the lawyers in the case, two protesters tested positive for covid-19, one of whom is still in detention and awaiting trial, although he has since been isolated.

Protesters are accused of disobedience to Presidential Decree 276/20, which established more restrictive measures in the context of the prevention of covid-19, four crimes of voluntary bodily harm and two crimes of voluntary damage to property of the National Police.
