Covid-19: 347 more deaths in Africa increase to 41,609

The number of deaths in Africa due to covid-19 in the last 24 hours was 347, now totaling 41,609, while infections rose to 1,727,837, plus 10,973, according to official data.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), in the 55 member states of the organization 9572 were recovered, for a total of 1,416,100.

Southern Africa continues to register the highest number of infections and deaths, with 794,372 infected and 20,452 dead. In this region, South Africa alone, the most affected country on the continent, accounts for 716,759 cases and 19,008 deaths.

North Africa, the second most affected area by the pandemic, has 480,198 infected people and 13,455 dead and in East Africa there are 205,493 infected and 3832 dead.

In the West Africa region the number of infections is 187,754 with 2736 fatalities, and Central Africa has exceeded the barrier of 60,000 cases in the last 24 hours, now recording 60,020 infections and 1134 deaths.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most deaths, after South Africa, has 6211 deaths and 106,707 infections, and Morocco has 3373 deaths and 199,745 infections.

Algeria follows with 56,419 infections and 1922 deaths.

Among the six countries most affected are Ethiopia, with 93,707 infections and 1437 deaths, and Nigeria, with 62,111 infections and 1132 deaths.

Among the African countries that have Portuguese as their official language, Angola leads in number of deaths and Mozambique in number of cases.

Angola has 270 deaths and 9644 cases, followed by Cape Verde (94 deaths and 8423 cases), Mozambique (88 deaths and 12,161 cases), Equatorial Guinea (83 deaths and 5083 cases), Guinea-Bissau (41 deaths and 2413 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (15 deaths and 935 cases).

The first case of covid-19 in Africa emerged in Egypt on February 14, and Nigeria was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to register cases of infection on February 28.

The covid-19 pandemic has already caused more than 1.1 million deaths and more than 43 million cases of infection worldwide, according to a balance sheet made by the French agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected at the end of December 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China.
