According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), in the last 24 hours there were in the 55 member states of the organization more 8792 cases of the disease and 6940 recovered, for a total of 1,224,397.
According to Africa CDC, Southern Africa continues to record the highest number of cases of infection and deaths, with 17,994 fatalities out of a universe of 737,879 infected.
In South Africa alone, the continent's most affected country, 674,339 cases and 16,734 deaths are reported.
North Africa, the second most affected area by the pandemic, has 338,162 people infected and 11,122 dead and, in West Africa, the number of infections is 176,844, with 2622 fatalities.
The East African region now accounts for 170,510 cases and reports 3326 fatalities and in Central Africa there are 57,830 cases and 1079 deaths, a number equal to that of the last 24 hours.
Egypt, which is the second African country with the most fatalities (after South Africa), has 5930 deaths and 103,193 infected, and Morocco accounts for 2194 deaths and 123,653 cases.
Algeria followed, with 51,373 cases of infection registered and 2030 fatalities.
Among the six countries most affected are Nigeria, with 58,848 infected and 1,112 dead, and Ethiopia, with 75,368 cases and 1,198 fatalities.
In relation to African countries whose official language is Portuguese, Angola leads in number of deaths and Mozambique in number of cases.
Angola records 183 deaths and 4972 cases, followed by Equatorial Guinea (83 dead and 5030 cases), Mozambique (61 dead and 8728 cases), Cape Verde (60 dead and 6024 cases), Guinea-Bissau (39 dead and 2362 cases) ) and São Tomé and Príncipe (15 dead and 911 cases).
