João Lourenço reaffirms commitment to fighting corruption

The fight against corruption and the recovery of assets embezzled from the public treasury will continue to deserve the attention of the Angolan Executive, assured the President of the Republic at the plenary session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN).

In the debate held on Wednesday, João Lourenço presented Angola's progress in combating corruption, highlighting the "very responsible attitude and respect for Angolan sovereignty" demonstrated by the UK authorities, when they returned to the country 2.5 billion dollars that were in a bank in London.

On the other hand, the President of the Republic regretted the fact that the countries that accepted to receive assets from corruption, without questioning their origins, do not respect the rulings of the Angolan courts.

"Some of these countries even arrogate to themselves the right to question the credibility of our courts, almost wanting to review the rulings issued by them, as if they were extraterritorial appeal bodies", he stated, at the meeting that runs until the 30th of this month, at the UN headquarters.

These assets, the President stressed, are the property of African states that were already impoverished during the colonial period and are sorely needed for the construction of infrastructures such as schools, hospitals, energy and water, roads, among others.

João Lourenço also stressed that the resources that come from the recovery of assets have a direct effect on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and, consequently, on the improvement of the general living conditions of the population.
