Covid-19: Angola with 279 cases and four deaths in 24 hours

Angola recorded 279 new cases of covid-19 in 24 hours, as well as four deaths and 186 recoveries from the disease, announced the country's health authorities this Thursday.

Of the new cases, 197 were registered in the province of Luanda, 39 in Huambo, 21 in Huila, nine in Namibe, five in Cabinda, four in Uige, three in Malanje and one in Cunene, aged between 1 and 80, of which 151 were males and 128 were females, according to a document signed by the Secretary of State for Public Health, Franco Mufinda.

According to the health authorities four deaths were registered, one in each of the provinces of Kwanza Sul, Malanje, Luanda and Uige, being two male and two female. The dead victims were aged between 1 and 73 years.

In the same period, 186 people were also considered recovered from the disease, of which 153 in Luanda, 17 in Moxico, 12 in Huila and four in Cunene, aged between 1 and 87 years.

Angola now totals 49,628 cases since the pandemic began, including 1313 deaths and 44,488 recovered from the disease, with 3827 cases still active.

Among the active cases, 20 are in critical condition and 37 are in serious condition.

Laboratories processed 2561 samples in the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 934,783 samples, with a cumulative positivity rate of 5.3 percent.

According to the most recent data from the African Union Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the continent has counted more than 7.9 million cases since the pandemic began, with more than 200,000 deaths.

Covid-19 has caused at least 4,593,164 deaths worldwide, among more than 222.46 million infections by the new coronavirus recorded since the pandemic began, according to the most recent tally by Agence France-Presse.

The respiratory disease is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, detected in late 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China, and currently with variants identified in countries such as the United Kingdom, India, South Africa, Brazil or Peru.
