According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), in the last 24 hours there were 8302 new cases in the 55 member states of the organization and 9156 more were recovered, for a total of 1,068,493 .
The largest number of cases and deaths continues to be registered in Southern Africa, with 696,556 infections and 16,361 deaths. South Africa alone, the continent's most affected country, accounts for 644,438 cases and 15,265 deaths.
North Africa, the second most affected area by the pandemic, now has 261,611 people infected and 9263 dead and in West Africa the number of infections has risen to 166,859 and that of fatalities to 2499.
In the East African region, the number of covid-19 cases is 149,151 and 2941 deaths, and in Central Africa there are 55,861 cases and 1053 deaths.
Egypt, which is the second African country with the most fatalities, after South Africa, registers 5,590 deaths and 100,557, followed by Algeria, with 1581 deaths and 47,219 cases.
Morocco accounts for 79.76 infected and 1491 fatalities.
In the six most affected countries are also Nigeria, with 55,829 infected and 1075 dead, and Ethiopia, with 62,578 infected and with 974 deaths.
Among African countries that have Portuguese as their official language, Angola leads in number of deaths and Equatorial Guinea in number of cases.
Angola records 130 deaths and 3217 cases, followed by Equatorial Guinea (83 deaths and 4990 cases), Cape Verde (43 deaths and 4575 cases), Guinea-Bissau (39 deaths and 2275 cases), Mozambique (31 deaths and 4832 cases) ) and São Tomé and Príncipe (15 dead and 901 cases).
