Country is expected to reach peak of covid-19 pandemic this month

The country is expected to reach the peak of the covid-19 pandemic by September, according to estimates by health authorities.

Silvia Lutucuta, Health Minister, explained that angolans have been more aware of the dangers of the disease and, for this reason, have adopted several protection measures. The greater awareness and protection may help the authorities to better control the disease, thus justifying the possible decrease in the number of cases, she said.

The minister, quoted by Jornal de Angola, admitted that if "something goes wrong, the multi-sectoral commission has all the flexibility to back down on the measures.

"Everything depends on the evolution of the epidemiological situation and the eventual obstacles that are found," said the head of the Health, who spoke at a press conference on the new measures adopted to control the pandemic.

Without advancing the exact date, Silvia Lutucuta revealed that a laboratory with greater testing capacity will start operating in the coming days. The laboratory, which will be inaugurated in the Special Economic Zone, in Luanda, will allow the country to carry out about 6000 tests per day, and so far more than 130,000 tests have been made to covid-19.

In addition, the government has invested in biosafety equipment, he said, adding that more than 700 fans have been installed in the country's campaign hospitals.

The strategy of treatment of the disease in the country will also change: "Only patients in extreme situation are placed in invasive mechanical ventilation, that is, intubated", she completed.
