Africa with 207 dead in 24 hours and 7062 new cases of covid-19

Africa has registered 207 deaths due to covid-19 in the last 24 hours, rising to a total of 31,701 in 1,313,219 cases of infection, according to the most recent pandemic figures on the continent.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), in the last 24 hours there have been 7062 new cases in the 55 member states of the organization and 5484 more have been recovered, for a total of 1,050,567.

The highest number of cases and deaths continues to occur in southern Africa, with 691,089 infections and 16,155 deaths. South Africa alone, the most affected country on the continent, accounts for 640,441 cases and 15,086 deaths.

North Africa, the second most affected area by the pandemic, now has 254,487 people infected and 9115 dead and in West Africa the number of infections has risen to 165,666 and the number of deaths to 2483.

In the East Africa region, the number of covid-19 cases is 146,452 and 2898 deaths, and in Central Africa 55,545 cases and 1050 deaths are counted.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most deaths, after South Africa, registers 5560 deaths and 100,228, followed by Algeria with 1556 deaths and 46,364 cases.

Morocco has 75,721 infected and 1427 dead.

In the six countries most affected are also Nigeria, with 55,456 infected and 1067 dead, and Ethiopia, which this Wednesday passed the 60,000 infected (60,784) and recorded 949 deaths.

Among the African countries that have Portuguese as their official language, Angola leads in number of deaths and Equatorial Guinea in number of cases.

Angola registers 124 deaths and 3033 cases, followed by Equatorial Guinea (83 deaths and 4985 cases), Cape Verde (42 deaths and 4400 cases), Guinea-Bissau (39 deaths and 2275 cases), Mozambique (28 deaths and 4647 cases) and São Tomé e Príncipe (15 deaths and 896 cases).

The first case of covid-19 in Africa emerged in Egypt on February 14 and Nigeria was the first country in Sub-Saharan Africa to register cases of infection on February 28.

The covid-19 pandemic has already caused at least 893,524 deaths and infected more than 27.3 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report made by the French agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected at the end of December in Wuhan, a city in central China.
