Angola and EU want to hold “business event” in the first half of 2021

The European Union (EU) and Angola intend to hold, in the first half of 2021, a “high level business event”, aiming to bring together businessmen and authorities to “discuss improvements in trade and investment”.

:

The intention was expressed in a statement issued after the 5th ministerial meeting between Angola and the EU, held by video conference.

The meeting was co-chaired by the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, and by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António.

In the statement, the two parties also demonstrated their intentions to "initiate exploratory dialogues on an investment agreement between the EU and Angola", supported by the Economic Partnership Agreement between the European organization and the member states of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) , in English).

Representatives from both sides were interested in working for peace and security, with EU representatives praising "the important role of Angola" in SADC, in the Economic Community of Central African States (CEEAC), at the International Conference of Great Lakes and cooperation in the Gulf of Guinea.

During the meeting, the EU announced that a package of up to € 20 million is being prepared to support the socio-economic response to the covid-19 pandemic in the country, including economic formalization, after it was announced in July by the then European Union ambassador to Angola, Tomas Ulciny.

On the preparation of the European Union-African Union summit, scheduled for this year, European and Angolan representatives highlighted the importance of the meeting, considering that it will prepare "ambitious plans for the future with joint strategic priorities".

The meeting on Tuesday also addressed the issue of corruption, with Brussels and Luanda "recognizing the importance of coordinated action" in this field, the statement said.

A meeting between senior officials from the EU and Angola, dedicated to "exploring new avenues of cooperation", should take place in Brussels, during the first half of next year.

The representatives at the meeting also agreed that the next Ministerial Meeting, the 6th, should take place in 2021, in Luanda.

Also participating in the meeting were the Executive Vice President of the European Commission, Valdis Dombrovskis, the Minister of Industry and Commerce, Victor Fernandes, and the Secretary of State for the Economy, Mário Caetano.
