National authorities detained a citizen of The Gambia, in possession of 161 alleged diamond stones, in the municipality of Cuango, Lunda Norte province, the local Criminal Investigation Service (SIC) said.

:

According to the head of the Department of Studies, Information and Analysis of SIC of Lunda Norte, Veríssimo Pandamar, the detention took place within the scope of “Operation Transparency”, underway since 2018, to combat diamond trafficking and illegal immigration.

The official, quoted by Angop, said that the diamonds were found in a house for the purchase and sale of this mineral, which had already closed last year.

“The stones were camouflaged in an air conditioning unit, installed inside an illegal diamond buying and selling house, which had been closed in 2019 in“ Operation Transparency ”, he said.

The 39-year-old Gambian citizen has already been present to the Public Prosecutor's Office, and preventive detention has been applied to him.

This is the second case of diamond seizure in the province of Lunda-Norte, the first occurring last week, with the arrest on the public road of two people illegally possessing a 147-carat diamond, in the town of Cafunfu, municipality of Cuango.
