Afrobasket 2025 opens with Senegal's victory over Uganda

Senegal defeated Uganda, 88-53, in the opening game of Afrobasket 2025, which began this Tuesday at the Arena do Kilamba pavilion, in Luanda.

The first round of Group D was opened by Senegal, leading 44-30 at halftime.

As the game progressed, Uganda never managed to overcome their opponent, losing all four quarters (30-18; 44-30; 60-39; and 88-53).

The top scorer of the match was Uganda's Deng Geu, who scored 17 points, followed by Senegal's Jean-Jacques Boissy, who scored 16 points.

The second match of the day was between South Sudan and Guinea. The first round of Group C, played at the Welwitschia Mirabilis Pavilion in Moçâmedes, Namibe, was won by Guinea (88-80).

At halftime, Guinea was already leading 46-38.

In this game, the top scorer was Alpha Diallo of Guinea, with 28 points.

In addition to these two games, the first day of Afrobasket, whose official opening ceremony is scheduled for 6:00 pm, also featured the match between Mali and Egypt, also in Group D.

The Egyptian team won 74-59.

Egypt opened the scoring, leading by seven points (35-28) at halftime.

Egyptian Ehab Amin was the top scorer, having scored 21 points, followed by Malian Siriman Kanoute with 16 points.

The only thing left is the host team's debut in the continental competition. Angola faces Libya at 7:00 pm this Tuesday in Luanda.

The attendance on this first day was impressive, with tickets sold out. "The organizing committee of the 31st Senior Men's African Basketball Championship informs that tickets for the matches on the first day of AfroBasket are sold out," reads a statement sent to VerAngola.

In the competition, Angola is in Group C, along with South Sudan, Guinea, and Libya.
