Politics Death of José Eduardo dos Santos

Portuguese PR does not comment on “electoral process in progress” and wants “climate of peace and democratic normality”

The Portuguese President of the Republic declined this Thursday to comment on “the ongoing electoral process” in Angola and wished that the José Eduardo dos Santos funeral ceremonies take place “in a climate of peace and democratic normality”.

At the end of a visit to the 92nd Lisbon Book Fair, which lasted more than an hour, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was asked about the announcement by the National Electoral Commission (CNE) that the MPLA won the general elections in the country with 51.07 percent, followed by UNITA with 44.05 percent of the votes, when 97.3 percent of the polling stations were scrutinized.

"The electoral process is ongoing, I will not comment," said the Portuguese head of state, who will travel to Angola on Friday night to attend the funeral of former president José Eduardo dos Santos, scheduled for Sunday.

Asked if he hopes that there are conditions for this ceremony to take place peacefully, the President of the Republic expressed that wish.

"I was invited, I will be there, I have no doubts about one point: it is important that there is what is truly fundamental in the experience of a democracy, which is the naturalness of the democratic process and respect for this process", he said.

Since the funeral of the former President of Angola still coincides with the electoral process, "what is natural and positive is that everything takes place in an atmosphere of peace and democratic normality", he wished.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will visit the Porto Book Fair on Friday, then return to Lisbon to fly to Luanda accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, João Gomes Cravinho.
