Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa confirms his presence at the funeral ceremonies

The Portuguese head of state, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, confirmed this Monday his presence at the funeral ceremonies of former President José Eduardo dos Santos.

"As announced in due course, the President of the Republic will be present at the funeral of former President José Eduardo dos Santos", reads a note published on the Presidency of the Republic's website.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will be accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, João Gomes Cravinho, he also refers in the note from Belém.

José Eduardo dos Santos, who ruled Angola from 1979 to 2017, died on July 8, aged 79, in Barcelona, Spain, where he has spent most of his time for the past five years.

The ex-President's body arrived in Luanda on Saturday from Barcelona on a TAAG airline flight, after a dispute between two factions of the family over the custody of the body.

The funeral ceremonies should take place on 28 August, in Luanda, according to the spokesman for the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), Rui Falcão.
