UNITA complains about government officials at polling stations. CNE says no problem

The National Electoral Commission (CNE) rejected this Tuesday the claim by the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) against the presence of government elements, linked to the ruling party, at polling stations.

Speaking to Lusa, UNITA's representative at the institution, David Horácio Junjuvili considered that "the principles that govern the CNE, the principle of transparency, reliability and smoothness of the process, do not allow, in the eyes of the common citizen, that a member of the Government in a structure like the CNE as chairman of the board".

"Nowhere in the world can anyone be a judge in his own case," he accused.

In response, CNE spokesman Lucas Quilundo said that the "law establishes criteria that the condition of a member of a polling station must obey and among the impediments and incompatibilities this requirement [a member of the Government] is not mentioned".

David Horácio Junjuvili reaffirmed UNITA's position against the electoral process and gave the example of the audit requested from the Computer File of Larger Citizens [FICM]: "the report did not have the date of when it was made, nor was the appointment of the company known. what we were interested in, the report says nothing about whether the file incorporates deceased citizens or not, the report says nothing".

Lucas Quilonda reaffirmed that the report concluded that the electoral procedures are correct and again rejected the accusations of lack of transparency.

"These accusations are unfounded, the laws governing the electoral process in Angola are sufficiently robust," he said.

For the election, "logistics are practically completed", explained Quilonda, also noting that the "consulates of the 25 cities already have all the electoral material ready".

47 organizations and 33 individuals are accredited as observers. "We are talking above 1300 national and international observers," he explained.

More than 14 million Angolans are called to the polls to choose a new President and representatives in the National Assembly in elections disputed by eight political formations.
