Court notifies opposition on popular action aimed at President and media

The Supreme Court notified four opposition parties to intervene in the popular action against the President and the public media, for the "lack of exemption and unequal treatment" or if they will be represented by civil society.

:

The action, in which civil society members subscribed to various civic organizations, was delivered last week and is aimed at the President, João Lourenço, the Angolan Media Regulatory Authority (ERCA), the Public Television of Angola (TPA), Rádio Nacional de Angola (RNA), Jornal de Angola and TV Zimbo, a state-owned private station.

The court cited, on Monday, the Social Renewal Party (PRS), National Unit for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), National Front for the Liberation of Angola (FNLA) and Nationalist Justice Party (P-Njango) within 10 days, to intervene in the main proceedings.

They must declare "in the case file whether or not they accept being represented by the applicants or if, on the contrary, they exclude themselves from that representation, the decisions rendered not being applicable to them under penalty of their passivity being considered as acceptance".

According to a judicial source, no answers have yet been received.

The action's signatories emphasize that the media has an increased responsibility in the consolidation of democracy, but the action of the bodies, especially in this election period, is marked by "lack of exemption and unequal treatment" of competing political forces.

Among the signatories of the petition are activist and musician Luaty Beirão, priests Jacinto Pio Wakussanga and Júlio Candeeiro, doctor Luís Bernardino, journalists José Luís Mendonça and Carlos Rosado de Carvalho, professor Cesaltina Abreu, writer Jacques dos Santos and actor Orlando Sergio.
