Paulão, former national team and Benfica player died

The former player of the national football team and of Benfica Paulo Alves 'Paulão' died this Tuesday in Luanda, relatives of the former football player confirmed to Lusa news agency.

According to the same source, the former footballer, who was coach of the Angolan club Atético Sport Aviação (ASA), had been hospitalized for a few days at the Hospital Geral de Luanda.

Born in Namibe province, Paulo Alves wore the Angolan national football team jersey on 42 occasions, between 1989 and 2001, and several times he wore the captain's armband.

At the beginning of his career, Paulão represented the 1º de Maio de Benguela team, making his debut in Portugal for Vitória de Setúbal in 1994/95.

Two seasons followed at Benfica, before spells at Académica and Sporting de Espinho, returning in 2003 to Angola, where he was also connected to Petro de Luanda and ASA.
