João Lourenço rules out possibility of postponing general elections

The President of the Republic has ruled out the possibility that the general elections, scheduled for next year, will be postponed.

:

Speaking on the sidelines of a visit to the future headquarters of the National Electoral Commission (CNE), Lourenço stressed that the ongoing political-administrative division will not affect the holding of the elections.

The head of state said that it makes "no sense to link the holding of elections with the idea of changing the administrative structure of the country, which is not even known yet when it will take place".

According to a note posted on the Presidency's Facebook page, João Lourenço also questioned whether there was "any logic" in building "works of the CNE's magnitude" to leave them unused.

"If we are creating material conditions for the elections, it is because we want to and will hold them," he assured.

The President also spoke about the choice of Laurinda Cardoso for the post of President of the Constitutional Court. According to the statement, Lourenço "challenged those who criticize the decision to point out where the Head of State disrespected the Constitution of the Republic or any other law.
