The President, João Lourenço, paid a tribute this Monday to the founding leader of Ghana, Nkwame N'krumah, highlighting his historical Pan-Africanist legacy and contribution in the struggles against colonial domination.

João Lourenço, who started on Monday a state visit to Ghana, his first in the country, visited the memorial in Accra, the country's capital, dedicated to Ghana's founding leader and committed Pan-Africanist, Nkwame N'krumah, laying a wreath at the historic politician's grave.

According to a statement from the President's press office, the head of state wrote in the book of honor a message honoring Nkwame N'krumah for the "revolutionary ideas" that "have become a source of inspiration for the peoples of Africa to launch their struggle against colonial domination, for the rescue of their dignity, for freedom and Independence".

João Lourenço praised the "universal dimension" of the Ghanaian statesman, a precursor of Pan-Africanism, who "selflessly put his knowledge, political vision and courage at the service of the noble causes of self-determination and sovereignty of Ghana" and stood out for a "legacy that lasts through time and across generations".

Kwame Nkrumah was Prime Minister of Ghana after the country's independence in March 1957, becoming President in 1960.
