Covid-19: Africa with 652 more deaths and 21,799 new cases in the last 24 hours

Africa has recorded 652 more covid-19 deaths, bringing the total to 195,475 deaths since the pandemic began, and 21,799 more new cases of infection with the disease in the last 24 hours, according to the latest official data.

According to the African Union Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) bulletin released Tuesday, the cumulative total of cases is 7,763,716, while that of recovered cases is 6,912,037, up 33,588 in the last 24 hours.

Southern Africa remains the most affected region, with 102,206 deaths associated with the disease and 3,694,347 infected since the pandemic began on the continent.

Within this region, South Africa alone, the country most affected by the pandemic on the African continent, already accounts for 81,830 deaths and 2,770,575 infected and with the disease.

North Africa, with 62,927 deaths and 2,345,083 cases, is the second most affected region on the continent, with a total of 55 countries.

East Africa has a total of 18,805 deaths and 906,016 infections, while the West African region has 8336 deaths and 599,561 cases.

Central Africa remains the region of the continent with the fewest cases and deaths: 3201 deaths and 218,609 infected.

After South Africa, the most affected country is Tunisia, with 23,430 deaths and 662,752 infected, followed by Egypt, with 16,727 deaths and 288,162 cases.

Morocco, with 12,540 deaths and 856,049 cases of infection, and Algeria, with 5240 deaths and 195,574 infected are other countries most affected by the disease.

Regarding the Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique remains the most affected by covid-19, with 1853 deaths and 146,053 cases, followed by Angola, with 1201 deaths and a total of 47,168 infected people.

Cape Verde registers 310 deaths associated with the disease and 35,283 positive cases, Equatorial Guinea 124 deaths and 9326 cases, Guinea-Bissau registers a total of 117 deaths and 5766 infected. São Tomé and Príncipe, meanwhile, has remained at 37 deaths and has recorded 2593 infections in the accumulated total since the beginning of the pandemic.

The first case of covid-19 in Africa appeared in Egypt on February 14, 2020, and Nigeria was the first sub-Saharan African country to record cases of infection on February 28.

Covid-19 has caused at least 4,500,620 deaths worldwide, among more than 216.34 million infections by the new coronavirus recorded since the start of the pandemic, according to the most recent tally by Agence France-Presse.

The respiratory disease is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, detected in late 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China, and currently with variants identified in countries such as the United Kingdom, India, South Africa, Brazil or Peru.
