According to a note from the office of the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, the vaccines are accompanied by the necessary materials to enable their administration, including syringes and needles, among others.

The products will be delivered to the Angolan health authorities by the Portuguese embassy in Luanda.

The note stresses that this new support from Portugal follows two others that have already been sent to Angola on July 15 and August 19.

"With this third batch of vaccines, Portugal has already sent a total of 370,000 vaccines aimed at supporting the Angolan authorities in the operationalization of their national vaccination plan against covid-19," the note indicates.

This donation, the document stresses, is part of the second phase of the action plan in the health response to the pandemic of covid-19 between Portugal and the Portuguese-speaking African countries (PALOP) and East Timor.

Portugal made a political commitment to provide PALOP and Timor-Leste 5 percent of the vaccines against covid-19 purchased by the Portuguese State, a commitment reinforced by the Portuguese government during the summit of heads of state of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), which took place in July in Luanda.

The operationalization of this action is the result of a joint effort of the MFA, namely through Camões - Institute for Cooperation and Language and the Portuguese embassy in Luanda, and the Ministry of Health, through the Directorate-General of Health (DGS) and the National Authority of Medicines and Health Products (Infarmed) and the 'task-force' of the National Vaccination Plan against covid-19 in Portugal.

The Minister of Health, Silvia Lutucuta, said Tuesday in Luanda that Angola intends to increase its numbers of vaccinated people, expecting to have 31 percent vaccination coverage by the end of September.

At this time, the country is implementing its vaccination plan, which foresees vaccinating 20 percent of the population in the first stage and 29 percent in the second, having already vaccinated more than 1.7 million people, using vaccines from AstraZeneca, Pfizer, Sputinik V, Sinopharm and Johnson & Johnson.

Silvia Lutucuta said that the country continues to carry out its health diplomacy, for the acquisition of vaccines, the current challenge of the Angolan government.

"We are going to receive a big shipment of vaccines, this week we are going to receive a little more than a million doses of Pfizer vaccines, an amount above the average of what we are used to," said the minister in statements Tuesday to the press.

Angola counted until Tuesday a total of 46.340 positive cases, 1166 deaths and 42.738 recovered from the disease.
