Covid-19: Africa with total of 190,809 deaths and over 7.5 million cases

Africa records a total of 190,809 deaths due to covid-19 and a cumulative 7,584,147 cases, although 6,711,406 people have recovered from the disease, according to the most recent official data.

According to the bulletin of the African Union Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) released this Wednesday, southern Africa remains the most affected region, with an accumulation of 3,617,515 infected and 99,883 deaths associated with the disease since the beginning of the pandemic on the continent.

In this region, South Africa alone, the country most affected by the disease on the African continent, already has 2,708,951 infected and almost 80,000 deaths (79,953 deaths).

North Africa, with 2,277,157 cases and 61,299 deaths, is the second most affected region on the continent, with a total of 55 countries.

East Africa accounts for 886,965 infections and 18,486 deaths, and the West African region records 587,089 infections and almost 8,000 deaths (7959).

Central Africa is still the region of the continent with the fewest infections and deaths: 215,421 cases and 3182 deaths.

After South Africa, the most affected country is Morocco with 821,129 cases of infection with the disease and 11,994 deaths, followed by Tunisia with 644,072 people infected and 22,714 covid-19 related deaths.

Egypt, with 286,735 cases and 16,683 deaths, is also on the list of those most affected by the pandemic in Africa, followed by Libya, with almost 300,000 cases (298,773) and 4099 deaths.

Regarding the Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique remains the worst hit by covid-19, registering 1813 deaths and 143,655 cases of infection, followed by Angola with 46,340 confirmed cases of covid-19 and 1166 deaths.

Cape Verde registers 306 deaths associated with the disease and 34,825 positive cases, Equatorial Guinea 123 deaths and 9096 cases, Guinea-Bissau registers a total of 108 deaths and 5580 infected. Sao Tome and Principe, meanwhile, has remained at 37 deaths for some time, but registers 2546 infections.

The first case of covid-19 in Africa appeared in Egypt on February 14, 2020, and Nigeria was the first sub-Saharan African country to record cases of infection on February 28.

Covid-19 has caused at least 4,439,888 deaths worldwide, among more than 212.4 million infections by the new coronavirus recorded since the pandemic began, according to the most recent assessment by the France-Presse agency.

The respiratory disease is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, detected in late 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China, and currently with variants identified in countries such as the United Kingdom, India, South Africa, Brazil or Peru.
