Covid-19: Africa with over 1134 deaths and 33,113 infected in the last 24 hours

Africa has recorded 1134 deaths associated with covid-19 in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths since the start of the pandemic to 179,986, and 33,113 newly infected, according to the latest official data.

According to the African Union Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the total number of cases on the continent is 7,136,140 and the number recovered is 6,217,218, plus 11,150 in the last 24 hours.

Southern Africa remains the most affected region on the continent, with 3,409,798 cases and 94,232 deaths associated with covid-19. This region is home to the country most affected by the pandemic, South Africa, which accounts for 2,554,240 cases and 75,774 deaths.

North Africa, which succeeds Southern Africa in the covid-19 numbers, today reached 2,111,039 infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus and 57,569 deaths associated with the disease.

East Africa has 847,801 infections and 17,689 deaths, and the West Africa region has 556,980 infections and 7,321 deaths. Central Africa has the fewest cases of infection and deaths, 210,522 and 3,175 respectively.

Tunisia, the second African country with more fatalities after South Africa, registers 21,220 deaths and 616,764 infected, followed by Egypt, with 16,597 deaths and 284,966 cases, and Morocco, which accounts for the second highest number of infections in the entire continent, 720,256 cases, but fewer deaths than the two previous countries, 10,607 deaths associated with the disease.

Among the countries most affected are also Algeria, with 4,654 deaths and 184,191 people infected, Ethiopia, with 4,450 deaths and 286,286 infections, and Kenya, with 4,241 deaths associated with the disease and 215,730 infections.

In relation to Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique accounts for 1,655 deaths associated with the disease and 135,528 infected accumulated since the beginning of the pandemic, followed by Angola (1,063 deaths and 43,998 cases), Cape Verde (298 deaths and 34,171 infections), Equatorial Guinea (123 deaths and 8,951 cases), Guinea-Bissau (83 deaths and 4,901 infected) and São Tomé and Príncipe (37 deaths and 2,478 infections).
