UNITA considers that preventive measures against covid-19 deteriorate the lives of Angolans

The National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) considered on Friday in Luanda that the situation of the populations "is deteriorating at a rapid pace" due to measures to combat covid-19, calling on the government to balance their implementation.

:

The situation was described by Maurílio Luiele, vice-president of UNITA's parliamentary group, in the preliminary assessment of the municipal days in Luanda province and in 12 other regions of the country where the party has deputies.

The purpose of the days is to provide elements that will support UNITA's positions in the debates of the different issues to be discussed in the next legislative session, the deputy said.

Maurílio Luiele said that in the end a memorandum will be prepared with the difficulties noted to be submitted to the governor of Luanda province, Joana Lina.

On Friday, the visit took place in eight municipalities of Luanda, in Saurimo, capital of Lunda Sul province, and Cuito, capital of Bié, with the rest scheduled for August 31 to September 5.

According to Maurílio Luiele, Friday's work consisted of visits to markets, contact with motorcycle cab drivers, and populars.

"We can say that the situation of the populations, for what we verify, is of a tremendous gravity", he defined.

He listed areas of the municipality of Belas, which he visited, pointing out that "they are completely abandoned to their fate" and that "social exclusion is a fact".

"The populations have made a tremendous effort to build their homes, although they are precarious, but it is an effort that they have achieved, but the state is slow to bring basic services - water, electricity - access roads are very precarious, those populations are excluded from national income, they don't count," he stressed.

According to the vice president of UNITA's parliamentary group, the areas visited are the portrait of other areas of Luanda, "which is closer to power.

The visit also extended to some hospital units, where it was found that the covid-19 pandemic removed a significant part of the means that should be directed to the assistance of other diseases.

"At Somague Hospital in Cazenga, the supply of medicines was reduced to 50 percent, this is an example of what we can point out. Our colleagues were also at the Mulenvos Hospital and found a situation not at all good," he said.

Regarding the population's mobility situation, Maurílio Luiele explained that for many places in the city the only alternative of transportation is mototaxis, since "conventional means of transportation are limited to asphalt.

"Then, to penetrate the neighborhoods, it is practically the mototaxis that serve as an alternative and these are constantly disturbed in their activities, we find recurrent complaints of police actions, which impede the activity of these citizens, who have in this environment the way of survival," he said.

For the UNITA deputy, the measures to prevent covid-19 "if, on the one hand, they are absolutely necessary, on the other hand, they have harmful effects on the life of the population".

"We have to find balanced positions and I think that these solutions are possible, but they have to result from an ongoing dialogue with the recipients of these measures, with the debate, with society, because there are other knowledges besides those who dictate the measures, which must be taken into account to weave the appropriate measures to face the covid-19 pandemic," he said.

Angola registered from March to the present date 2471 cases, of which 106 deaths due to covid-19.
