The African Union's Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), which gathers the latest data from the official reports of the organization's 55 members, says that since Sunday 8160 cases have been recorded in the region and data have been recovered from 6681 patients.
In total, there are currently 975,643 recovered from the new coronavirus in Africa.
The largest number of cases and deaths continues to be registered in Southern Africa, with 670,084 infections and 15,015 deaths. South Africa alone, the continent's most affected country, accounts for 625,056 cases and 14,028 fatalities.
North Africa, the second most affected area by the pandemic, now has 228,417 people infected and 8479 dead and in West Africa the number of infections has risen to 159,960 and that of fatalities to 2386.
In the East African region, the number of cases of covid-19 is 133,104 and 2670 deaths and in Central Africa there are 53,665 cases and 1039 deaths.
Egypt, which is the second country with the most fatalities, after South Africa, has 5399 deaths and 98,727 cases, followed by Algeria, with 1501 deaths and 44,146 cases.
Morocco accounts for 61,399 infected and 1111 fatalities.
In the six most affected countries are Nigeria, with 53,865 infected and 1013 dead, and Sudan, with 13,189 infected and 823 dead.
Among the Portuguese-speaking African countries, and according to the data released by their official authorities, Cape Verde leads in number of cases (with 3852 cases and 40 deaths), followed by Mozambique (3821 cases and 23 dead), Angola (2624 cases and 107 dead). São Tomé and Príncipe, with 895 cases and 15 fatalities, and Guinea-Bissau (2205 infections and 34 deaths) that have maintained the indicators since Saturday.
Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), registered 4941 infected people and 83 deaths, according to the most recent data, updated on Friday.
