Covid-19: Africa with more recovery than new cases in the last 24 hours

Africa this Friday counted 28,850 deaths due to covid-19, registering in the last 24 hours more patients recovered (11,394) than new infections (8499), according to official data.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), which gathers the most recent data from official reports of the 55 members of the organization, the region recorded 254 more deaths than on Thursday.

Those infected are now 1,220,511, up 8499 from the previous day, with those recovered totaling 953,643, up 8499.

The highest number of cases and deaths of covid-19 continues to occur in southern Africa, with 661,570 infected and 14,584 dead.

South Africa alone, the most affected country on the continent, accounts for 618,286 infected and 13,628 dead. In the last 24 hours, this country has registered 126 fatalities, almost half of the 254 deaths counted throughout the region.

North Africa, the second most affected area by the pandemic, now has 221,211 people infected and 8267 dead and in West Africa the number of cases rose to 157,595 and the number of deaths to 2363.

In the East Africa region, the number of covid-19 cases is this Friday of 126,677 and 2602 deaths and in Central Africa 53,458 cases of infection and 1034 deaths are counted.

Egypt, which is the second country with more deaths, after South Africa, registers 5342 deaths and 98,062 infected, followed by Algeria with 1462 deaths and 43,465 cases.

Morocco has a higher number of registered infectees, 57,085, but a lower number of deaths than neighbouring Algeria: 1011 deaths.

In the five countries most affected are also Nigeria, with 53,317 infected and 1011 dead, and Sudan: 13,045 infected and 823 dead.

Among the Portuguese-speaking African countries, Cape Verde leads in number of cases (with 3699 cases and 38 deaths), followed by Mozambique (3651 cases and 21 deaths), Angola (2415 cases and 105 deaths), according to data released by the official authorities of these countries.

Guinea-Bissau (2205 infections and 34 deaths) and Sao Tome and Principe (892 cases and 15 deaths) maintain relatively stable numbers compared to recent days.

Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), registered 4928 infected people and 83 deaths, a number that has remained since the last update on 23 August.

The first case of covid-19 in Africa appeared in Egypt on February 14 and Nigeria was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to register cases of infection on February 28.

The covid-19 pandemic has already caused at least 826,000 deaths and infected more than 24.2 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report made by the French agency AFP.
