During Africa CDC's weekly press conference on the new coronavirus pandemic, John Nkengasong noted that testing and other efforts to contain covid-19 are largely working.

According to John Nkengasong, 23 of the 54 African countries have reported a sustained decrease in new cases confirmed in the past two weeks.

However, he left a warning: "We should not go home to celebrate the end of the pandemic.

The Director of Africa CDC indicated that more than 11 million new coronavirus tests have been conducted across the continent, involving 1.3 billion people. The goal now is to conduct a further 20 million tests by November.

The African continent has reported more than 1.2 million confirmed cases, about half in South Africa.

The first case of covid-19 in Africa appeared in Egypt on February 14 and Nigeria was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to register cases of infection on February 28.

In Africa, there are 28,596 confirmed deaths in more than 1.2 million people infected in 55 countries, according to the most recent pandemic statistics on that continent.
