Angola registered three cases of circulating polio this year

Health authorities have recorded three cases of circulating polio in the last eight months, cases derived from vaccination itself, an event that happens when vaccine coverage is low.

:

The information was given by the Secretary of State for Public Health, Franco Mufinda, this Tuesday, in the margins of the 70th session of the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Committee for Africa.

Franco Mufinda, quoted by Angop, stressed that Angola has not registered cases of wild polio since March 2011.

He explained that in circulating polio the vaccine is not a post-vaccination adverse effect and does not depend on the vaccine, but it is an event that happens when there is low polio vaccine coverage in the community.

According to Franco Mufinda, on September 4 the second vaccination campaign is expected to start three months late in the provinces of Namibe, Huambo, Zaire, Cunene and Cuando Cubango.

The work, carried out by videoconference, addressed the topics on "Response to covid-19" and "Eradication of wild polio in Africa".

Angola holds the position of rapporteur for the Portuguese speaking countries.
