Covid-19: Africa registers 187 more deaths and over 900 thousand recovered

Africa has registered 187 deaths due to covid-19 in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths to 27,779 in almost 1.2 million cases, having surpassed the barrier of 900,000 recovered, according to official data.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), which gathers the data of the 55 members of this organization, since Sunday 9167 more have been infected, with a total of 1,187,937 positive cases.

Southern Africa continues to register the highest number of cases and deaths due to the new coronavirus: 650,167 infected and 13,948 dead.

South Africa alone, the most affected country on the continent, accounts for 609,773 infected and 13,059 deaths.

North Africa is the second most affected area by the pandemic, with 211,702 infected and 8002 dead, followed by West Africa: 155,057 infected and 2318 dead.

East Africa accounts for 118,385 infected and 2486 deaths due to covid-19, while Central Africa accounts for 52,626 infected and 1025 dead from the new coronavirus.

After South Africa, Egypt is the second country with more deaths, 5262 dead and 97,340 infected, followed by Algeria with 1422 dead, in a universe of 41,904 infections.

Among the five countries most affected are Nigeria, with 52,227 cases and 1002 deaths, and Sudan, with 12,836 infected and 812 deaths.

Among the Portuguese-speaking African countries, Cape Verde leads in number of cases (with 3509 cases and 37 deaths), followed by Mozambique (3395 cases and 20 deaths), Guinea-Bissau (2149 cases and 33 deaths, the same numbers as on Saturday), Angola (2171 infected and 96 deaths) and São Tomé and Príncipe (891 cases and 15 deaths, the same numbers as on Saturday), according to data released by the official authorities of these countries.

Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), updated the data on Sunday and recorded 4926, an increase of 34 people compared to the 4892 infected recorded on August 1, and 83 deaths, a number it has maintained since the beginning of the month.

The first case of covid-19 in Africa emerged in Egypt on February 14 and Nigeria was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to register cases of infection on February 28.

The covid-19 pandemic has already caused at least 805,000 deaths and infected more than 23 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report made by the French agency AFP.
