Africa accounts for 26,289 deaths due to covid-19

The total number of deaths by covid-19 is this Wednesday of 26,289 in Africa, 405 more than on Tuesday, with more than 1.1 million infected by the disease since the beginning of the pandemic, according to the most recent official data.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), the number of infected is 1,136,246, while the number recovered is 859,488.

The highest number of cases and deaths of covid-19 continues to occur in southern Africa, with 628,360 infected and 13,087 fatalities.

In this region, South Africa, the most affected country on the continent, accounts for 592,144 infected and 12,264 dead.

North Africa, the second most affected area by the pandemic, now has 199,145 infected and 7649 dead since the beginning of the pandemic, while in West Africa the number of cases has risen to 149,852 and the number of fatalities to 2245.

In the East Africa region 106,839 cases were recorded and 2,299 deaths and in Central Africa 52,050 cases of infection and 1009 deaths are now recorded.

Egypt is the second country with more deaths, after South Africa, with 96,753 infected and 5184 deaths, followed by Algeria, which now has 39,888 cases and 1378 deaths.

Among the five countries most affected are also Nigeria, with 49,895 infected and 981 deaths, and Sudan, with 12,485 cases and 805 fatalities.

Among the African countries that have Portuguese as their official language, Angola leads in the number of deaths. Angola registers 90 deaths and 1966 cases, followed by Cape Verde (36 deaths and 3253 cases), Guinea-Bissau (33 deaths and 2149 cases), Mozambique (19 deaths and 3045 cases) and São Tomé e Príncipe (15 deaths and 885 cases).

Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), has 4821 infected and 83 deaths, figures that were released by the Equato-Guinean authorities on 1 August.

The first case of covid-19 in Africa emerged in Egypt on 14 February and Nigeria was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to register cases of infection on 28 February.

The covid-19 pandemic has claimed at least 781,194 lives and infected more than 22.1 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected at the end of December in Wuhan, a city in central China.
