UNITA militants detained in Sanza Pombo will await trial in freedom

More than 20 UNITA militants detained since March in Sanza Pombo following conflicts involving supporters of the rival MPLA, were released and will await trial in freedom, with periodic presentations to the authorities, according to a party source.

Speaking to Lusa, the provincial secretary of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) in Uíge, Félix Simão Lucas, said that the detainees were released on Friday and received on Monday "the release", accompanied by a credential to appear in court within 15 days.

They are accused, among other crimes, of vandalism and destruction of public property, he indicated.

In the group of 26 detainees, according to Félix Simão Lucas, there were also activists, who are not UNITA militants, but no sympathizers of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), and with whom they got involved in conflicts during a political act.

According to the UNITA representative, there were no arrests in flagrant crime.

"During the night, at four in the morning, the police went to pick them up at the house," he said, adding that militants who were not involved in the disturbances, but who had only stayed at the house of other UNITA members, were also taken.

The incidents in Sanza Pombo, one of the 16 municipalities in the province of Uíge, in the north of the country, took place on March 19, when supporters of the two political forces, who were participating in different acts, crossed paths, engaging in riots that resulted in injuries and material damage.

Subsequently, the supporters of the "little brothers" were arrested.

UNITA considered at the time, at a press conference in Luanda, that it was a case of "state terrorism and arbitrary arrests" of its militants.

Images circulated on social media depicting the incidents in Sanza Pombo, which also resulted in the vandalization of the municipal station Rádio Nacional de Angola (RNA).

At the time, the provincial secretary of UNITA in Uíge, Félix Simão Lucas, presented photographs that portrayed the clashes, with some injuries and material damage, referring that the MPLA overlapped the UNITA act, previously communicated to the authorities.

Last March, the MPLA attributed responsibility for the clashes to UNITA, stating that this was always its behavior.
