National mourning forces the postponement of the Luanda International Fair

The seven-day national mourning to honor former president José Eduardo dos Santos forced the cancellation and postponement of several events, including the Luanda International Fair (FILDA), the biggest event of its kind.

:

In a note to which Lusa had access, FILDA, whose start was scheduled for this Tuesday and where more than 600 exhibitors would participate, informed that the pre-opening, which was scheduled for this Monday, was postponed to 15 of July, which means that the event will start next Saturday and run until the 20th of July.

On Sunday, although there was already speculation about the postponement of the event, Eventos Arena, which co-organizes FILDA together with the Ministry of Economy and Planning (MEP), announced on its social networks that the 37th edition of the fair would take place between 12th and 16th of July.

Only this Monday, on the eve of the opening, the organization announced on the social network Instagram that the assembly deadlines were extended until July 14, promising "more information in the coming days", while on the event page, at 19:00, it remained the indication of the previous dates (12 to 16 of July).

Contacted by Lusa, the MEP also did not officially confirm the new dates, although the participating companies have already been informed.

Portugal will be present at FILDA with 25 companies, of which 14 are part of a mission of the Business Association of Portugal (AEP), operating in different areas such as the food industry, construction, mining, engineering and information technologies, among others.

A source linked to the AEP indicated that, due to the postponement, exhibitors were given the opportunity to reschedule their trips so as not to harm their schedules, but there was no withdrawal.

Also due to the death of José Eduardo dos Santos, the Portugal-Angola Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIPA) postponed the meeting of businessmen that it had planned to organize this Monday in Luanda, to talk about the new moment of the Angolan economy and highlight the role that Portuguese companies can play in the short and medium term in Angola, an event that should now take place in September.

FILDA must have 630 exhibitors, direct and indirect, from 15 countries: Angola (host country), Portugal, Germany, South Africa, Namibia, São Tomé and Príncipe, Japan, China, United Kingdom, Italy, Brazil, Democratic Republic Congo, Poland, Turkey and the United States of America.

Festivals, fairs and musical shows, as well as political, sporting and cultural events have been canceled across the country due to the seven-day national mourning enacted in Angola.

In public institutions, flags are hoisted at half mast, according to the defined protocol.

The Government has already declared that it intends to hold a state funeral in Luanda, a decision opposed by Tchizé dos Santos, stating that this was not his father's will, and that José Eduardo dos Santos did not want to be buried in Angola while João Lourenço was in power.
