Salt production in the country points to 350 thousand tons. Goal ends import needs

The entry into operation of three new salt pans and the supply of electricity to Cidade do Sal, in Benguela province, will allow an increase in the annual production of salt to 350 thousand tons, thus eliminating the need to import the product.

According to José Gomes, provincial director of Agriculture and Fisheries, there is a strong commitment of national business in the sector, with high investment projects. Angop, the official recalled that in 2014 the production of salt in Benguela was around 35 thousand tons per year, while in 2020 the levels are at 110 thousand tons.

One of the main obstacles to increasing production is even the lack of energy from the public grid, taking into account the high costs of purchasing fuel for generators. The director believes that the problem will soon be overcome with the entry into operation of a thermal power plant, which is already being assembled in the municipality of Baía Farta.

Totas Garrido, president of the Association of Salt Producers in Angola, informed that the pandemic has affected the sector, mainly with regard to domestic consumption and exports. However, he added that only in the first half of the year 60 thousand tons of salt were produced.

Remember that the salt produced in Benguela is of marine origin, its quality being proven, with all the chemical properties of sea water present in the product's production.

The country needs around 250 thousand tons of salt per year to satisfy its internal consumption needs.
