Workers at Hospital Divina Providência announce new stoppage as of Monday

Workers at the Hospital Divina Providência, in Luanda, including nurses, doctors and administrative staff, announced a new stoppage as of next Monday to demand salaries equivalent to the civil service, better working and food conditions and replacement of subsidies.

:

According to a statement, sent this Friday to Lusa, the strike, which should take place from July 26 to August 6, results from the "systematic violation" of the agreements signed last March 4 and from the "disrespect of the obligation of its compliance by the employer".

"It is necessary to demonstrate the hospital administration, the general discontent and expectations of employees to come and get their rights restored and better working conditions", reads the note made public this Friday.

Compliance with the terms of the agreements signed last March, namely equal salaries for employees by internal contract, in accordance with the civil service, reinstatement and negotiation of suspended subsidies in 2016 and the improvement of food for all employees are among the demands.

The employees of the Hospital Divina Providência, a hospital unit with public and private resources, also complains of "discrimination and retaliation" against the members of the union commission and asks for the "dismissal" of the board of directors for "not guaranteeing stability and security of employability".

The health unit, located in Kilamba Kiaxi district, one of nine in Luanda province, registered its first strike last April, lifted after negotiations with the employers, whose promises "are not fulfilled".

The strike period, says the hospital's union commission, does not cover essential services, but these "will count on a 50 percent reduction in employees scheduled for the shift."

The strike covers the medical centers of São João Calabria, Our Lady of Peace, Santa Catarina and São Marcos, all assigned to the Hospital Divina Providência.

António Ulu, member of the union's negotiation committee at that mixed hospital, told Lusa that the strike declaration was sent on Tuesday to the hospital's management, the Luanda provincial government and the provincial police command.

Lusa tried to contact the management of the health unit, but without success.

The hospital's director, Miranda Panzo, said last April as part of the first workers' strike that "financial difficulties" were "restraining the normal functioning" of the Hospital Divina Providência.
