Covid-19: Africa with almost 1,000 deaths in one day and 38,691 new cases

The number of covid-19-associated deaths in Africa rose to 161,638 in the past 24 hours, representing 990 more deaths on the continent and 38,691 more new cases, according to official data.

According to the African Union Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the number of infected in Africa since the start of the pandemic is 6,374,393, up 38,691 in the last 24 hours.

The number of recovered is now 5,584,166, of which 37,628 were recorded in the last 24 hours, according to the same source.

Southern Africa remains the most affected region of the continent, with 3,065,786 cases and 83,431 deaths associated with covid-19. This region is home to the country worst hit by the pandemic, South Africa, which has 2,342,330 cases and 68,625 deaths.

North Africa, which succeeds Southern Africa in the covid-19 figures, has reached 1,819,660 infected and 51,933 deaths associated with the disease.

East Africa accounts for 775,716 infections and 16,454 deaths, and the West African region records 512,377 cases and 6688 deaths.

Central Africa is the region of the continent with the fewest infections and deaths: 200,854 cases and 3132 deaths, respectively.

Egypt, the second African country with the most deaths after South Africa, records 16,470 deaths and 283,906 infected, followed by Tunisia, with 18,052 deaths and 558,306 cases, and Morocco, which has the second highest number of infections in the entire continent, 567,758 cases, but fewer deaths than the previous two countries, with 9517 deaths associated with the disease.

Among the most affected countries are also Ethiopia, with 4363 deaths and 278,105 infections, and Algeria, with 4008 deaths and 158,213 infected.

Regarding the Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique registers 1190 deaths and 103,713 cases of infection accumulated since the beginning of the pandemic and Angola accounts for 977 deaths associated with the disease and 41,405 infected accumulated.

Cape Verde records 297 disease-associated deaths and 33,452 infections, Equatorial Guinea 123 deaths and 8863 cases, Guinea-Bissau counts 74 deaths and 4117 infected, and São Tomé and Príncipe 37 deaths and 2413 infections.

The first case of covid-19 in Africa appeared in Egypt on February 14, 2020, and Nigeria was the first sub-Saharan African country to record cases of infection on February 28.

The covid-19 pandemic has caused at least 4,128,543 deaths worldwide, among more than 191.9 million cases of infection with the new coronavirus, according to the most recent tally by Agence France-Presse.

The respiratory disease is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, detected in late 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China, and currently with variants identified in countries such as the UK, India, South Africa, Brazil and Peru.
